What Tethers You?

While sitting reading quietly next to my wife, I was asked, “What keeps you tethered to the world?” At first, I didn’t understand the question. After asking for a little explanation, the question was designed to find out what is it that drives me to get out of bed in the morning and feel anchored to engage the world as opposed to becoming despondent and wanting to leave this life for a better one. It was a powerful question indeed.

It is a powerful question in that it uncovers the revelation of the source of our psychic energy. Expressed in another way – How do you refuel your jets, especially when pressed and stressed. Carl Jung’s framing would be in terms of Introversion vs extraversion preference as one layer the question reveals. What are your natural preferences to re-engage your life energy in a healthy manner? Too often in the dynamic stressed-out world we live in today, people seek their connection to the physical world through drugs, alcohol, sex, and constant media diversions which really don’t last for more than fleeting moments.

Even more telling about this powerful question is that it can reveal another layer which contains a fundamental source of our life energy – our values! Our values contain a rich source of our individual motivation. This sounds simple enough, yet in real life most of us are living examples of contradicting and competing values. For example, if I ask you directly, “Do you value honesty?” you’d more than likely rapidly say “YES!” If I followed up and asked, “Have you ever told someone how great they looked and didn’t really mean it?” If you were being honest you’d probably also say “Yes.” After admitting your fib, you would probably rationalize stating that you didn’t want to hurt the other person’s feelings.

Examples like the above surround and abound us on a regular basis. The deeper impact to our psychic and soulful experience accumulates as a heavy blanket depleting our spirit, our motivation. Over time there’s no wonder why we become stuck in moving our life forwards in seeking happiness and fulfillment. We feel lost to our true selves. Mid-life crisis, depression, frustrating and unfulfilling relationships become norm.

But what if we could learn to become unstuck? What would that take? What is the path to happiness and fulfillment?

The answer is simple to understand, but hard for many to acknowledge and achieve.

The answer is to become true to yourself and your life purpose! You were born to be your own unique and gifted person to create a life of meaning and purposefulness in this world. Discovery of this becomes your tether.

Unfortunately, few people are attuned to what that means to them individually and merely think the phrase is just “fluff.”

As a business and executive coach, many of my clients come to me because they have lost their passion and motivation. They have reached a point in their lives and careers that they have no sense of direction. Some have lost hope for future. Without hope, it becomes mighty difficult to get out of bed in the morning. By many societal measures their lives may appear successful with good jobs, businesses, and families. But still they have hit a wall. The toll of our unconscious conflicted values behavior causes us to become mysteries to our better selves.

Working together we engage in deep and profound exploration of their strongest values. Eventually the clients (re)discover their purpose. Their state of being changes as they choose to live their everyday from a position of conscious values-based choices and decisions. Motivation returns. Success inevitably results.

Whether or not you feel stuck ask yourself – What tethers you to this world? Periodically doing a deep dive exploration, especially with a coach, can fuel the lamp that lights your fire.
